Welcome to our first Playing@Home with TLC post!

Our first TLC suggested activity highlights fine motor skills and without a doubt, will be a repeat favorite for families with children of all ages! In fact, this activity will provide parents a sensory-rich relaxing moment. Following are easy-peesy recipes for cooked and uncooked home-made spring playdough. Be creative! Add food coloring (spring colors) and natural scents such as lemon, lime, rosemary, or peppermint. If developmentally appropriate, we recommend involving the children in the process of making the playdough too – measuring, pouring and stirring the ingredients. Of course, be careful near the stove and remember to let the playdough to cool completely before playtime.

  1. 1 cup flour
  2. 2 tsp cream of tartar
  3. 1/2 cup salt
  4. 2 Tbsp canola oil
  5. 1 cup warm water
  6. Drops of food coloring and/or natural scents

Mix all ingredients and cook over low heat until dough forms.

Unlike commercial playdough, this playdough is 100% safe for children still exploring objects by mouthing. It also lasts for months if stored in an airtight container.

*If you don’t have cream or tartar (or don’t want to use the stove), following is another uncooked playdough recipe:

1 cup flour
1/3 cup salt
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons canola oil

Mix the dry ingredients first, then slowly pour in the wet ingredients. Knead until smooth and store in an airtight container.
