13 Dec Recipe for Colored Rice: Sensory Activity for Home
All the TLC Developmental Play and Parenting Classes focused on sensory development this week. Following is a refresher article from PBS on how children learn best when all their senses are engaged- Sensory Play. The TLC class activity was a great success during both the baby, toddler and sibling classes- even the most active little ones stayed focused at the sensory table, organized by filling and dumping colored rice while feeling and listening to it fall between their hands and fingers. You too can do this at home! All you need is an under-the-bed storage bin, tarp, rice, vinegar, food coloring and a good vacuum for clean up. To make the colored rice WITH your little ones:
- In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of uncooked white rice with 1 table spoon of vinegar and a few drops of food coloring (or non-toxic liquid water color paint)
- Stir the rice until the desired color
- Pour rice on top of sheets of parchment paper
- Wait until rice is dry to the touch (or play when wet and explore rice with rainbow-colored hands!)
- Make as many batches of colors as you wish- add animals, vehicles, cooking utensils, funnels…
